The IRS Can’t Phone Home

For those thinking that the IRS may come a’calling, that won’t be happening anymore…at least when it comes to initial contact. In a memo dated May 20, 2016, phone calls are no longer the acceptable means for making initial contact to those taxpayers who may be facing an audit. Going forward, form letters will be the way to go, with telephone calls being allowed 14 days following the date of the mailed letter. While traditionally, phone calls were the first step in the audit process, the rise in phone scams have clearly prevented this measure from moving into the future. This could also be applied to emails, so until something more innovative arrives, snail mail is the way to go.
